Observation: The 2014 study identifies this animal as a subantarctic fur seal. A juvenile was alive in poor condition, picked up by visitors, then released the next day in Coffin Bay. The structured species field is unset because Seal Watch does not offer this taxon.

Observation: A freshly moulted juvenile male had a distinctive healed scar on its right foreflipper. The paper identifies it as the same recognizable male later seen repeatedly on Kangaroo Island.
